Past Simple
Use it for: finished actions in the past.
- Time words: yesterday, last week, two days ago, in 2020
- Form: regular verbs + -ed (play β played), irregular verbs (go β went)
- Negative: did not + base verb (didnβt play)
- Question: Did + subject + base verb? (Did you play?)
Past Continuous
Use it for: actions in progress at a specific time in the past.
- Form: was/were + verb + -ing (I was reading)
- Often with: while / when
- Negative: was not / were not + -ing
- Question: Was/Were + subject + -ing?
Past Perfect
Use it for: one past action happened before another past action.
- Form: had + past participle (had eaten, had gone)
- Often with: because, after, before, when
Past Perfect Continuous
Use it for: an action that started earlier and continued up to another past moment.
- Form: had been + verb + -ing (had been studying)
- Often with: for / since
